EXCURSION 1: THE ANTWERP LOCALS WELCOME YOU!
The Antwerp locals are known for their indiscretion, frankness and glib conversation. They are friendly and proud to show you the most beautiful parts of their ‘metropolis’. This walk takes you along charming alleys and squares to the majestic Market Square or Grote Markt and the convivial Groenplaats. After this interesting introduction you will immediately feel at home in the heart of the city and you can go on to explore the city yourself!

The tour will end in a local pub, where we will treat you to a very nice Belgian beer!

Price per participant: €15 (beer or soft drink included)

EXCURSION 2: THE DIAMOND DISTRICT

Your guide will help you experience the heyday, downfall and resurrection of Antwerp’s diamond industry in the 19th century.

During this walk you will walk around the world diamond centre. Through the fascinating story of your guide you will relive the glory days, the near collapse and finally the resurrection of the Antwerp diamond industry in the nineteenth century.

From Central Station you walk to the ‘Diamond Square Mile’, the Antwerp diamond district. A motley of different nationalities finds its way through the streets here, busily negotiating from one transaction to another. Diamond workers, jewellers and diamond merchants feel at home here in their own world of grinding shops, showrooms and exhibitions.

Price per participant: €9

EXCURSION 3: QUARTIER LATIN - more than a distinguished theater district
Frivolity, luxury and lyrical arts were and are the keywords of this vibrant and artsy neighborhood with charming green corners and elegant terraces. The Quartier Latin is a vibrant and diverse area of theatres, shops, medicine, plants, health care and social welfare, banks, antiques, museums, fashion, cloisters and markets. Your guide will take you for a 3 hours' walk through the neighborhood, and give you enough time to visit the Rubens House.

Price per participant: €19 (entrance Rubens House included)

  • Cocktail on Thursday, July 14

A sponsored cocktail will follow the Janssen Pharmaceutica Prize for Creativity in Organic Synthesis ceremony.

  • Symposium Banquet on Thursday, July 14 - Grand Café Horta (Art Nouveau Room)

To conclude the Symposium in style, the organisers cordially invite you to attend the banquet, scheduled for Thursday, July 14 at 20:30 in the beautiful Art Nouveau room of the Grand Café Horta.

This restaurant with impressive decorative elements from the art nouveau period, is an icon in the center of Antwerp and a unique place to have dinner. Grand Café Horta is named after the Belgian art nouveau architect Victor Horta. Remains of his tore-down building ‘Het Volkshuis’ were used in this restaurant.

The participation in the dinner is optional, and subject to prior booking at the price of 50€. A limited number of places is available, so make sure to book your place in time!
