On Wednesday August 29, participants will have the opportunity to take part in one excursion in the afternoon. All excursions will leave from the University at 3:00PM. Please book your excursion while registering for the symposium. (We reserve the right to cancel an excursion if we do not reach a minimum of 15 participants per guide)
Excursion 1: Walk through the “Old Vienna“ Price: 21 € Duration: app. 2 hours
The purpose of this walk is to present parts of old Vienna that cannot be shown to the visitor in the course of a regular sightseeing tour. Starting at Josefsplatz, our walk takes us past the Imperial Palace, the winter residence of the Imperial family. After a walk through the Volksgarten we reach Beethoven-Pasqualatihouse where the famous composer lived for more than 8 years. Subsequently, our walk leads us over Herrengasse and Graben to St. Stephen’s Cathedrale. After a turn around with its numerous cultural and historical highlights we lead you through small lanes and yards, which really provide us an impression of the old Vienna.
Excursion 2: Life at the Viennese Court Price: 28 € Duration: app. 2 hours
This city walk starts with a tour through the individual tracts of the Vienna Imperial Palace, the winter residence of the Imperial family. To get an impression of their daily life, you will be shown the former office and private apartments of Emperor Franz Josef and his wife, Empress Elisabeth, known as Sisi. You will visit the newly built Sisi Museum and the Silver Chamber, where the valuable silver tableware and service is exhibited, which was used by the Imperial family on a daily basis.
Excursion 3: Art Nouveau in Vienna Price: 26 € Duration: app. 2 hours
In the course of this city walk we will show you some extraordinarily beautiful Art Nouveau buildings, The most renowned representatives of the Art Nouveau style are the architects Josef Hoffmann, Joseph Olbrich and especially Otto Wagner (1841-1918), who ranks among Vienna’s most important and noteworthy Art Nouveau architects at the turn of the century. His masterpieces, like, for example, the Karlsplatz subway station or the building of the Post Office Savings Bank brought a major change to the townscape of Vienna. The highlight of our walk is a guided tour through the Secession, which was created by architect Joseph Olbrich and features the “Beethovenfries” of Gustav Klimt.
Excursion 4: Vienna – City of Music Price: 27 € Duration: app. 2 hours
Vienna hosted numerous musicians who lived and worked in this city. On our tour we will pass the residences of Josef Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven to mention just a few. From the Michaelerplatz across the Augustinerstrasse we walk to the Vienna State Opera, one of the most famous Opera houses in the world. Along the Kärntnerstrasse, Rauhensteingasse and Domgasse we reach the St Stephen’s Cathedral where we visit the Chappell where Mozart’s body was blessed. Passing through small alleys we get to the Heiligenkreuzerhof a picturesque baroque inner courtyard (quad). Passing the Baseliskenhaus we continue our walk cross the Postgasse and Riemergasse to the Seilerstätte. Finally you visit the house of music where you can enjoy all conveniences an interactive museum has to offer.
Alternative: After the visit at the house of music, you can immerse yourself in the newly opened Mozart museum into the life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. (+ 5€ to be paid on site) |
